My interest in Tropical rainforest stems from my MSc time, when I studied the ecology of vascular epiphytes in standing trees in rain forest I central Guyana. After my MSc I worked 9 year (in two periods) in Guyana as Programme Team-leader of the Tropenbos Guyana Programme, during which time I also worked on my PhD research. The work in Guyana, which involved the communication with scientists, politicians, local end-users a.o., helped me to see that good science can also be applied science. Much of the work of our Programme has helped policies for Forest Management in Guyana and we also contributed significantly to the data support of the National Protected Areas Strategy (http://www.bio.uu.nl/~herba/Guyana/Plant_Diversity_Guyana/). After the Guyana Programme, I worked a while as consultant mainly in Guyana (see e.g. National Vegetation Map of Guyana http://www.forestry.gov.gy/vegmap.htm), at the Utrecht University, as Associate Professor ‘Spatial Analysis of Forest Conservation and Rehabilitation’, at ITC (2001 – 2002) and finally came back to Utrecht in 2002 as Associate Professor Biodiversity Assessment.

At present my research focuses on understanding the origination and regulation of biodiversity, which I investigate In the Framework of the Amazon Tree Diversity Network (http://www.bio.uu.nl/~herba/Guyana/ATDN/) and the RAINFOR Programme (http://www.geog.leeds.ac.uk/projects/rainfor/). I am particularly interested in causes for tree alpha- and beta-diversity. For our research on alpha-diversity we draw on a network of over 50 researchers across the Amazon and we are trying to separate actuo from palaeo-signal in our diversity data. The model of Ricklefs and Schluter (with the addition of dispersal limitation, ter Steege & Zagt 2002) is my favoured thought model.

For the study of beta-diversity, our model ecosystems are the forests on white sand podzols and the adjacent terra firme forests in the Guianas and Upper Rio Negro.

While trees are my personal pet-plants, my students work on topics such as biodiversity research of Herbarium material (how can Herbarium data be used in biodiversity assessment), Bryophytes (neutral models with no dispersal limitation), herbivory mediating beta-diversity between white and brown sand, and vascular epiphytes.

Within the Utrecht University I am responsible for the courses Evolutionary Biology (1st year BSc programme, c. 250 students) and Biodiversity and Landscape (2nd year BSc, c. 40 students), which I both coordinate. In addition to that, I contribute to the course ‘Evolutionary Biology’ for students of biomedical sciences (c. 30 students); the first year’s course ‘Biodiversity’ and the course Tropical Ecology.
